With Great Responsibility Comes Great Power

Even if you’re not a comic book geek, you’ve probably heard the phrase, “With great power comes great responsibility,” before. It’s a profound piece of advice, but I also believe the opposite to be true: With great responsibility comes great power. Jack Canfield, author of The Success Principles and co-creator of the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul book series, says that the first principle of success is to “take 100% responsibility for your life.” What does that mean, exactly? Well, let’s put it this way: If you spend any of your time complaining about your current circumstances or if you blame any of your problems on anyone else, you are not taking 100% responsibility.

Why does this matter? Because if you’re blaming the condition of your life on outside circumstances, you’re giving up your power. If you make the excuse that you can’t find a job because of the lousy economy, you’re saying that the economy controls your life. But the economy does not control your life. You do. Why don’t you want to blame your life on outside circumstances? Because you can’t do anything to change them. All you can change is the way you react to them. The economy may be lousy, but you have the power to rise above that. There are hundreds of successful people out there who have faced much more difficult circumstances than you and prevailed, so get ready to throw all of your excuses out the window.

The first time many people hear this, their immediate response is, “So it’s my fault I have no money? It’s my fault my marriage is falling apart? It’s my fault I’m overweight? You’re blaming all of this on me? Give me a break!” The most important thing I have to tell you is to erase the words “blame” and “fault” from your vocabulary, unless you’re talking about the San Andreas Fault in California. These words will not serve you in any way. Nobody’s blaming you and it’s not your fault that you’re not living the life you want to be living. The word you should burn into your brain is “responsibility.” You need to look at your circumstances, take responsibility for everything in your life, and start making changes today, because you’re the only one who can.
